Fish We Catch |
|
|
| |
Seasons and Times: |
|
| |
Our season is April through late September. Full day fishing charters leave
the dock at dawn and
return to the dock around 2:00 or 3:00 pm pending on the
fishing. Half day charters start at or just before dawn and
end around 5 hours later. The afternoon charter leaves the
dock around 3 or 4 pm. and return about 5 hours later. |

Steelhead |

Orca Charters
starts out in the cold waters of April, fishing closer to
shore and with “planer board with lines clipped to them” as the fish are generally near
the surface as the water temperature begins to warm up. These
are good times for catching Brown Trout as they are hungry,
looking for something to eat from the run-off from the cliffs
from the melted snow and spring rains. |

In June and July we
travel farther off shore to the deeper waters and fishing
grounds for lean powerful Steelhead or Rainbow Trout, Lake Trout and
some King Salmon as they follow
baitfish and cooler water. Out in deeper water is where we
find the scum lines or bug lines on the surface and thermal bars
that run down a little deep as the Lake Trout, Salmon and Steelhead
school-up out here. There is plenty of action our here in “the
deeps” and 20 fish on in a day is common. |

King or Chinook |
| |
In late July
and into August, the
water warms up and fish are plentiful, although lean Lake
Trout are harder to find. Quality is what we’re after, as we
look for the big King or Chinook Salmon, and
the beginning of a Coho Salmon run. The strength of the Kings
and the fight they put up is unbelievable. This is great time for
“catch and release” fishing although the fish have a lot to do
with that. |

September brings
shorter days and a cool down of the waters near
the Manistee
Harbor.
The fish start to move off shore again. This is a beautiful,
but at times a windy month, with excellent fishing days getting better as
spawning begins. Coho are more plentiful again.
Many good eating sized fish have been caught in
September and October. |
